[Verse 1]

      G C G D
By a lonely prison wall I heard a young girl calling
 G C D
Michael, they have taken you away
         G C G D
For you stole Trevelyan's corn so the young might see the morn
      D G
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay

[Chorus]

Low lie the fields of Athenry where once we watched the small free birds fly
     G C G D
Our love was on the wing, we had dreams and songs to sing
        D G
It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry

[Verse 2]

By a lonely prison wall I heard a young man calling
 G C D
Nothing matters Mary, when you're free
             G C G D
Against the famine and the crown I rebelled, they cut me down
    D G
Now you must raise a child with dignity

By a lonely harbour wall she watched the last star falling
         G C D
As the prison ship sailed out against the sky
             G C G D
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray for her love in Botany Bay

It's so lonely round the fields of Athenry

Big Note
Hey man, it's "Botany Bay," not "Barney Bay," oh my god, someone get me a glass of water!!! (I like the effort though, good work!) Botany Bay is the old British name for Sidney, Australia. Back in the day, if one had the misfortune to run afoul of the British government, especially if they were Irish or Scottish, they would often be "transported" to the penal colony in Botany Bay where they would live out the rest of their short lives in squalor and virtual slavery. This is what the song is about; Micheal and his cohorts have been sentenced to be transported to Botany Bay. In fact, the song is based on a real incident. What happened is that during the potatoe famine, Lord Trevelyan, who unlike most of his British contemporaries seems to have had a shred of humanity, shipped over a cargo of corn from North America by way of relief. Unfortunately it was Indian corn, too dry and hard for the local mills to proccess, and accordingly it was put in a werehouse for storage. Some of the local farmers, who along with their families were starving, thought that they would try the Indian corn anyways, broke into the werehouse and stole Trevelyan's corn. Wether or not they were able to make use of the stolen corn is not known. What is known is that most of said farmers were rounded up the next day by the local British authorities, condemned to transportation, and sent off to Botany Bay. Hence the song.

Big Note
Also, third verse should read, "by a lonely harbor wall... she watched the last star falling...." as opposed to "hobble" and "stalk." It is of the least significance, but maybe people would like to have an exact version of the lyrics.
