I originally started notating the song in open C when I realized he plays
the A# (the highest note in the into) on the 12th fret, which changes the
rest of the tuning.  Also I have a feeling instead of an E for the G string
as in open C tuning, he probably tunes to another C.  There's no name for
this tuning really, but strummed open its a C7 chord.  Open C7 tuning if you like.
Thanks to Travmann777 for the helpful advice.  Let me know how
this sounds and if there's any corrections you think could be made.

He then does some variations high up on the neck.  This is close, but it's
difficult to isolate Pecknold's exact playing with the electric guitar and
mandolin playing similar but different and louder variations over him.

For the interim while I finish up the other tabs I've already started and all the other projects in my life which constitute my livehood and for which I'm compensated, I've updated the tab with an addendum explicating the tab's flaws as well as addressing my personal thoughts about particular types as well as thanking the helpful people. Incase it doesn't appear on the update I'll post it here. ***Before anyone starts commenting or rating this tab, be aware that I'm redoing it in open C tuning. Another member (Travmann777) kindly brought it to my attention that the song is played in open C tuning. I initially suspected an alternate tuning anyhow because I was having problems with the chord voicings, but I was in a hurry to post the tab for those who requested it. The song is mostly accurate in its current form, though the solo is tabbed without a cappo and I realized I couldn't tab the outro's solo since open tuning is needed to play the chords and the solo simultaneously as Pecknold does, which covers the range of the neck as I noted in the tab. I apologize for missing what should have been obvious to someone who plays in alternative tunings all the time particularly open C tuning as in Independence day-Elliott Smith, as well as some dead give aways in the song itself. I appreciate those who gave the tab a good rating nonetheless, and Travmann777 for bringing the tuning to my attention without penalizing the tab's rating over and honest mistake which will be revised shortly. And quickly--to those who don't contribute to the site, but feel content to penalize the rank of contributing, active, and constructive members who dedicate hours of their free time for the benefit of strangers wanting to play a song, done for nothing in return but the satisfaction of helping others play the songs they love, those backrow members who leave their contemptuous comments instead of helpful or constructive criticism, thanks for nothing. But do enjoy your ability to play the songs you learned from tabs notated by the selflessness of other people compensated with a dose of unnecessary cavalierism.***

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9JZCeJ6D3M Here's a cover where robin pecknold commented on tuning. He said, "The tuning I used was something like CGCGBC, which makes the riff easier, if you play it like 7-5-0-3 on the 'B' string" So if you want try another tab in that tuning

You need to take all of the notes down 5 steps seen as you have said to stick the capo on the 5th fret.
