I worked this out pretty quickly listening to the song for the first time
with my guitar in hand and when i checked the tabs on here no one had the
intro tabbed correctly so here it is.
 
Hes playing it up on the twelfth fret but it much easier this way, notes
are the same. Great tab for beginners.

He plays it at the 12th fret because the A that you are playing on the D string is an octave lower. He plays it on the open A string. If you are going to play it like that you might as well just fret an A and a D at the 5th and just play the A, D, G strings. It will not be right but it will not sound any wronger(?) than the way you play it, and will be far easier!
