Maybe you should mention you need a capo at the 2nd fret to play in the original key.
I prefer to play Am7 (575555) and slide back down to the D during the verses.
The G to A, I think sounds better as Em7 to A7.
Again, in the break, I would play Em7 and A7, then followed by D. Repeat that. Then Em7 - A7 - F#m. Finishing with E7 to A7.
A small point, but Gerry Marsden has said in interviews that the lyric is... "...ferry, cross the Mersey...", as if requesting the ferry itself to cross the Mersey. Cross in this case is not a contraction of across.

Thanks DiddyD for your excellent observations. I've made most of the changes you have suggested and....added a few others....and resubmitted to UG. When everybody gets involved the ultimate product gets improved.....thanks again...
