Properly, this song was done in "high strung" or "Nashville" tuning, where E A D and G are replaced with .027w, .018, .012 and .009 diameter strings and tuned an octave up. The result is having a 6 string playing the high octave half of a 12 string set. But unless you're willing to dedicate a guitar to this string/tuning combination, the broken barre method is a good approximation.
