Joy Division - Candidate
 
The third track off of Unknown Pleasures, and one of the more polarizing songs.
 
Bernard, the guitarist for the band, did not particularly like this song. In order to interest him,
Martin Hannett, the producer of UP, played his guitar parts in reversed and through heavy distortion,
which he liked. So, in order to play the actually guitar parts, you need to rely on live versions. The
band rarely played the song live, perhaps because of Bernard's relative distaste for the song.
 
All of the live versions and the Piccadilly Radio session version are significantly shorter than the UP
version, and all of them vary in lyrics and composition, somewhat. For this particular tab, I will be
referring to the Factory/Russell Club, Manchester (July 13, 1979) version. Multiple versions of this
gig exist, in varying pitches. I will be referring to the one with the most accurate pitch to the studio
version I can find.
