NEVER KNEW YOUR NAME - Mason Jennings
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tabbed by: George
Email:dojettes@yahoo.com
Tuning: Standard (or 1/2 step down like most of Mason's stuff but capo on 1)
This song is pretty easy to play on the piano, even for somebody like me that isn't very good :)
If playing on piano, play C E G for C chord and switch to C F A for F chord.
Same for the others (Am= A C E and Dm= A D F) (F= F A C and Bb= F Bb D)
For the Chorus, (C= C E G) (G= D G B) (F= C F A)
Verse 1
C C F C
If this house is on fire
C C F C
You gonna run for the door
Am Am Dm Am
If the door is on fire
Am Am Dm Am
You gonna kneel on the floor
F F Bb F
You get down low enough
F F Bb F
You learn to love the flame
Chorus:
C G F
I've been loving you forever, but I never knew your name
C G F
I've been loving you forever but I
Verse 2
C C F C
We fell in love in the woods
C C F C
In the Hollywood hills
Am Am Dm Am
In the death of a friend
Am Am Dm Am
In the bottles and pills
F F Bb F
Through war and at peace
F F Bb F
I've loved you the same
Chorus:
C G F
I've been loving you forever, but I never knew your name
C G F
I've been loving you forever but I
Piano Solo - (In Octaves)
F E
G A B
G B
D B
G F G D
F
C C F C
Put the ghost in my sail
C C F C
Put the spin in my wheel
Am Am Dm Am
Roll me up in your heart
Am Am Dm Am
Aw, make it seem real
F F Bb F
I'm clay in your hands
F F Bb F
I'm the ball in your game
C G F
I've been loving you forever, but I never knew your name
C G F
I've been loving you forever, but I never knew your name
C G F
I've been loving you forever but I

hey, we may be silly....
...but i think the G sounds a little to high in that progression. I'm sticking to the B flat.
for the piano solos between the chorus and 3rd verse, I just strum through chorus' chords (C G F) rather than try to repeat what mason does on the piano.
Silly rabbit.

Oops thanks for the progression typo in the verses- I guess I just typed it in too fast, I always play it the way you wrote it :)
And I agree, the G does sound a little bit too high... it would work either way though.

A good ear is a great thing to have, but a little music theory and piano playing might trump it a little :) Now although this is not a tell tale way to understand Mason's chord progressions, but try to think about it this way. The F note is the 4th note in the C scale, right? And the D is the 4th note in the Am scale, right? Why would he use the G (only the second note of the F scale)? Download Audacity and slow this song down to %50 speed. Get your hands on a set of ivories and try these chords. With your good ear, you should be able to hear the Bb in there. If not, oh well, we can agree to disagree. Happy playing!
