[Verse 1]
  D A Bm D G Bm
I often take these night shift walks when the foreman's not around
  G D G
I turn my back on the cooling stacks
    D Em A
And make for open ground
    Bm G A D
Far out beyond the tank-farm fence
          G Bm
Where the gas flare makes no sound
     G D G
I forget the stink and I always think
     D A D
Back to that eastern town

[Verse 2]
    D A Bm D
I remember back six years ago
     G Bm
This Western life I chose
    G D G
And every day the news would say
     D Em A
Some factory's going to close
        Bm G A D
Well, I could have stayed to take the dole
    G Bm
But I'm not one of those
       G D G
I take nothing free, and that makes me
   D A D
An idiot, I suppose

[Refrain]
     G D
So I bid farewell to the eastern town
  Bm A D
I never more will see
    G D
But work I must, so I eat this dust
    Bm Em A
And breathe refinery
      Bm G A D
Oh, I miss the green and the woods and streams
      G Bm
And I don't like cowboy clothes
      G D G
But I like being free and that makes me
   D A D
An idiot, I suppose

        D A Bm D
So come all you fine young fellows who've
     G Bm
Been beaten to the ground
     G D G
This western life's no paradise
         D Em A
But it's better than lying down
        Bm G A D
Oh, the streets aren't clean and there's nothing green

And the hills are dirty brown
        G D G
But the government dole will rot your soul
     D A D
Back there in your home town

[Refrain]
   G D
So bid farewell to the eastern town
    Bm A D
You never more will see

There's self-respect and a steady cheque
   Bm Em A
In this refinery
         Bm G A D
You will miss the green and the woods and streams
        G Bm
And the dust will fill your nose
    G D G
But you'll be free, and just like me

An idiot, I suppose

I recommend transposing +2 and playing in the key of D instead of using capo 2 and playing as if in key of C. That's because where the chord shown above is Dm (with capo 2), you hear a low E in the recording. You can't get that with capo 2 unless you tune the lowest string down a step, but that requires refingering other chords to get the low root notes which are also heard in the recording.
