There's a video of a guy doing his own acoustic version of this song. It's so amazin, it beats the original guitar parts by far (and I say that as a fan of the verve/ashcroft for more than a decade), I'm not joking. He uses some kind of picking. Just search for appalachian springs guitar solo. It's just "wow". He unfortunately gave only one hint on his approach : "somethg like when to hit the bass and the melody together." It just sounds great, I wish at some point I will have that skill (I know it's not like Hendrix but to me compared to me it's very skillful :>)
