This is my first time laying out chords for a song, and definitely not perfect. At the very least, hopefully
it will inspire someone to improve upon it.
I just play this in standard tuning, but I know Chad typically tunes a half step down for his songs.
[Verse 1]
D Bm
He put on his shirt carefully, making sure that the buttons matched up
G
His sleeves were always too short
D A
But at least it meant he could always see his watch
D
And often he checked the time
Bm
And it would be stopped
G
He always thought it was broken
D A
But then he'd remember he had to wind it, oh
D Bm
Though he knew some day he'd remember to wind it and it wouldn't work after all
G D A
Maybe that would happen on the exact day he didn't think it was broken
[Chorus]
D
Isn't that the way it works
Bm
Isn't that the way it goes
G
While the fox he lurks
D
And while the rooster crows
A D
Isn't that the way things are
Bm
The way the world ain't flat
G D A D
But you can only run so far before you make it back
[Verse 2]
D Bm
He could drink from the sink by craning his head far to one side
G D
The day he figured that out, one of the horses died
A D
It was one of the twins that barely a week'd been alive
Bm
It was the one who could barely stand
G D A
We'd wrapped his legs with gauze and bandages from inside from one of the kitchen drawers
Bm
We called him stretch
G
Cuz he was so skinny and tall
D
Momma said both twins rarely live with horses
A
We was lucky to have one livin at all
D Bm
And me and my momma slept in the stall next to them in the bed of a pickup
G D A
All us kids piled in
D
I remember the momma horse lickin and cleaning up her newborn babies
Bm
She was working so hard (she was working so hard)
G D
She was working so hard (she was working so hard)
A Bm
She was working so hard
G
She was working so hard
D
She was working so hard
A
She was working so hard
[Chorus]
D
Isn't that the way it works
Bm
Isn't that the way it goes
G
While the fox he lurks
D
And while the rooster crows
A D
Isn't that the way things are
Bm
The way the world ain't flat
G D A
But you can only run so far before you make it back
Bm
Isn't that the way it works
G
Isn't that the way it goes
D
While the fox he lurks
A
And while the rooster crows
Bm
Isn't that the way things are
G
The way the world ain't flat
D A
You can only run so far before you make it back
Bm
You can only run so far
G
You can only run so far

Before you make it, before you make it back
