This version is specifically for the ukulele, in either High- (gCEA) or Low-G (GCEA) tuning. While this version is similar to some of the guitar versions (specifically, version 1), the chord variations used here are selected explicitly for easy fingering and rapid chord transition on the ukulele, while maintaining the characteristic campanella effect that is a hallmark of this song. Slash ‘/’ chord variants are avoided, as they are specific to guitars and largely meaningless on an instrument lacking bass strings, like the uke.¿Te ha sido útil esta información?

Helplessly Hoping
From their eponymous album, Crosby, Stills & Nash, 1969
Helplessly Hoping is famous for the marvelous vocal harmonies of Crosby, Stills and Nash, but the song itself
is musically interesting. Written in G, it’s basically a simple Am-C-G-D (ii-IV-I-V) chord progression.
(And if you want to simplify the song, you can just play it that way.) What makes the song interesting are
the chord embellishments, the -7s, add9s, sus2s and sus4s, etc. Stephen Stills cleverly wove these variations
in to allow the chords to seamlessly blend into each other, often changing just one or two notes moving from
chord to chord, and maximizing use of open strings. The song is intended for fingerpicking; individual notes
continue to ring from one chord setting to the next. Matt Dahlberg applies the classical guitar term,
campanella, to this technique. It produces a bell-like sound quality as the chords transition. I use a simple
out-in, four-finger, p-a-i-m (thumb-ring-index-middle) picking pattern, repeated twice per measure throughout
the song. For those who prefer to strum, the specified DDUUDU “island strum” pattern works well. All chords
are played for a full measure, except chord pairs surrounded by ‘| |’ vertical brackets, e.g., |G Cadd9|.
Chord pairs surrounded by vertical brackets are played half a measure each. All chords use their default
Ultimate Guitar ukulele voicings.
