Now we're safe ashore, Jack

Sponger I and loader you
C D G
Through the whole commission
G
Long we've tossed on the rolling main
C D
Now we're safe ashore, Jack
G C G

Oftentimes have we laid out
C D G
toil nor danger fearing,
G C G
Tugging out the flapping sail
C D G
to the weather earing
G
Long we've tossed on the rolling main
C D
Now we're safe ashore, Jack
G C G
Don't forget your old shipmate
G D G
Fal dee ral dee ral dee rye eye doe!

G C G
When the middle watch was on
C D G
And the time went slow, boy
G C G
Who could choose a rousing stave
C D G
Who like Jack or Joe, boy?
G
Long we've tossed on the rolling main
C D
Now we're safe ashore, Jack
G C G
Don't forget your old shipmate
G D G
Fal dee ral dee ral dee rye eye doe!

G C G
There she swings, an empty hulk
C D G
Not a soul below now
G C G
Number seven starboard mess
C D G
Misses Jack and Joe now
G
Long we've tossed on the rolling main
C D
Now we're safe ashore, Jack
G C G
Don't forget your old shipmate
G D G
Fal dee ral dee ral dee rye eye doe!

G C G
But the best of friends must part
C D G
Fair or foul the weather
G C G
Hand yer flipper for a shake
C D G
Now a drink together
G
Long we've tossed on the rolling main
C D
Now we're safe ashore, Jack
G C G
Don't forget your old shipmate
G D G

Watch film "Master and Commander" for melodic details, a ripping yarn of Napoleonic war, sea-faring folk. A film I've watched many times and never got bored, Authentic feel as in this song voiced by the ship's "master" as after dinner entertainment. Russel Crowe's best performance as the redoubtable Captain Aubrey RN by far.

For what it's worth, I did read a couple of O'Brien's Cpn Aubrey novels, but (sadly) didn't find either of them quite as gripping as the film. John
